MY GO TO PRIMERS

"IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BASE"
When I first started out with makeup a couple years ago, I had no idea what primers were let alone what they were used for. As my passion for makeup developed I learnt about more products as well as developing the steps in my makeup routine and now I never skip the priming stage!
WHAT DO PRIMERS DO?
Primer is a product which is usually in a cream or gel form that goes on after moisturiser and before foundation. It allows the foundation to go on smoothly and encourages its longevity. It can also be worn on its own for a fresh look. Below are my favourites!

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer | £25.50 PURCHASE HERE
This primer is silicone based which is generally used for implants and beauty enhancements. However, in this case the silicone based primer creates an extremely smooth base on the face, filling in any fine lines and other imperfections you may have to ensure the foundation sits smoothly. It leaves a silky, matte finish but if you're wearing foundation on top, the matte will no longer show through unless your foundation is matte too. I have repurchased this a few times, solely because of how amazing it makes my foundation look - in person and in pictures (it photographs so well by the way).

Loreal Infallible Mattifying Primer | £7.99 PURCHASE HERE
I wouldn't say this is a dupe for the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, more of a cheaper alternative. And yes, alternatives do have some differences. It does leave a silky/velvety finish like the Smashbox one and also has a silicone gel base but I found with this one, some areas looked greasy within a few hours which meant my actual foundation didn't last as long as I wanted it to. If you're okay with touching up throughout the day and are looking to spend less on primers, then this is the one for you.

Rimmel 5in1 Pro Primer | £6.99 PURCHASE HERE
I mentioned this back in my May favourites and it was definitely a favourite for me during the summer as I went through a tube and a half. It does it's job, it smooths, it encourages the longevity of my foundation. However, when I switched up my foundation and used something different, I found that it didn't work as well. That is another thing to think about, especially with drugstore primers. Some only work well with certain foundations. This primer worked amazingly with Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturising Foundation (reviewed here) and when I started using Illamasqua's Skin Base (reviewed here) it didn't look good at all.

Bourjois Happy Light Matte Serum Primer | £10.99 PURCHASE HERE
This ones quite pricey for a drugstore primer. It's not as good as the other primers I have mentioned but it does the job. You don't need to use a lot of product, a little does go a long way. And as it's in a glass pump dispenser, you can control how much you want to use. The only downside is it is scented and the scent isn't even that nice. This one is for you oily skin ladies and there is a luminous version for those with dry skin.

Maxfactor Face Finity All Day Primer | £10.99 PURCHASE HERE
Another basic drugstore primer which is also on the pricey side. It does make the skin look and feel smooth however, it doesn't really encourage the longevity of my foundation. This is good for those days where you're only out for an hour or so otherwise for longer days, it does not make your foundation look good at all after a few hours.

Smashbox Primer Water | £20.00 | PURCHASE HERE
It took me a really long time to get used to the concept of this primer as well as trying to find out if it's making any difference to my makeup application at all. I use a normal primer at first, dab my foundation onto my face, spray this primer water onto my skin and then use my damp beautyblender to blend in my foundation. This application encourages my base to look really flawless and also encourages its longevity. More details on the link above.

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer | £29.00 PURCHASE HERE
This was the first primer I ever purchased and is still a favourite of mine. This has a gel-like texture and it is very lightweight and hydrating. It dries super quick and allows my foundation to blend in smoothly. It does not budge your base throughout the day and lasts through any weather (whether it's super hot or freezing cold). A perfect primer to use all year round and for any skin type. I always find myself reaching for this!
